Compliments of Bluebee @ www.bimmerfest.com

2-10-2011

Hi,
I'm Bluebee. I live in California. My goal is always to search, ask, listen, and then add value to every thread I can.

I feel most (but not all) questions have already been asked ... so ... what I strive to do is collect and summarize existing responses.

In each of the threads that I foster, I list all the relevant references; and for the best threads, I combine them into
-  the VERY best of E39 Links

I've also tried to collect and summarize every single abbreviation used in the E39 forums for the past few years:
- BMW-specific E39 acronyms (list and definition)

I never did this newbie "intro" thing and by now I've been here a few years (so it's kind'a late for that).

A little about "me" ...
- I am intensely private, so for the longest time, I didn't even enable PMs (and I don't do "friend" requests either).
- I love helping people ... but some of them have to start helping themselves a little bit.
- I can't stand poor grammar or spelling or rudeness ... and I all-too-often call others out on that (some people think writing like a five-year old is OK).
- For those people, I have to remind them that sentences are like turn signals ... they're not for you ... they're for the other guy ... it's a courtesy to us to write in proper English.
- I try to post a relevant picture in at least half of my posts (which is tremendously expensive of my time); but I do that to ensure the point is well made.
- I "care" that people get their answers ... and I go to a lot of trouble to provide clickable links so that they can do so efficiently (again, this take tremendous time and energy).

But I'm not perfect by any means ...

I often ask "dumb" questions (simply because I'm ignorant); but I try to recover and add value that was previously unknown.
Examples of dumb questions that turned into very valuable threads might be:
- 2002 E39 ASC BRAKE ABS lights on => Diagnostic Procedure & Parts Location
- Can you show me on this pic where the headlight adjusters are?
Do the four frame jack rubber blocks do anything?
- AAA is towing my car in 30 minutes (total electrical failure)  (1) (2)
- What brake pads are recommended for street use on the E39?
- How to choose H7 high/low beam replacement bulbs?
etc.

I feel there should be a 1:1 ratio of repairs to DIYs for anyone here (although it's more like 1000:1 in reality).
For me, if I repair something, then I should write a DIY. My DIYs never skip a step (if I can help it); but they're totally specific to my make and model and year and options.

And, if someone asks ME a question, I should respond (and also report back on EVERY thread that I open what the final result is and was) ... and even update that thread afterward as new information arises. And, I strive to cross link with other threads, for easy one-click access (basically, if you hit one of my threads, it's cross linked to where else you need resources).

Here are some of my textual DIYs:
- Removal instructions for the alternator & drive belt system of a 2002 525i
- Removal instructions for the fan shroud of a 2002 525i

Unfortunately, I'm a klutz. So I make a LOT of mistakes. Sometimes I think I should write my DIYs not as what do to, but, as it turns out, what NOT to do!
- How not to do an E39 gravity feed oil change (1)
- How not to do an E39 vacuum extraction oil change (1)
- How not to repair the E39 leather seat stitching (1)
- How not to repair your E39trunk wiring loom (1) [ how to do it right (1) ]
- How not to remove the nipple from the E39 radiator (broken radiator nipple)
- How not to put your E39 fan clutch back on (crooked fan clutch nut)
- How not to bleed your E39 cooling system (broken bleeder screw)
- How not to replace your E39 thermostat (thermostat loom misplaced)
- How not to remove your E39 expansion tank (broken expansion tank nipple & cn90 repair)
etc.

My biggest problem, at this point, is how to organize my thousands of pictures I post so I can write better pictorial DIYs.
So, to start solving that problem ... I'm gonna put pictures of my E39 in various stages of repair in this thread ... and then reference those pictures below in the DIYs that I write.

Starting now,
Bluebee

Here are some pictures I'll be using in a DIY for how to repair the front driver side window regulator.

The previous post above I've been daily updating finally (after two months) locked up. So it's back to a new post.

I'm getting more experience with this, so I'll try to improve the links by consolidating for common specific topics an attempt at predicting future questions that will be asked based on the answers (yeah, like Jeopardy) so that a single keyword-rich sentence answers "most" of the upcoming questions before they're even asked.

I'll let you in on a little secret.

ALL of the links I reference are in a single thread, called the 'bestlinks' thread, cleverly hidden at the top of the forum.

So, doing a quick /alternator rebuild(F3) in that thread, I come up with the following:

Rebuilt Alternator DIYs:

  • - Aioros 1999  Valeo Alternator rebuild DIY (1) and quest for materials (1)
  • - DIY for replacing the brushes in an (Audi)  Valeo alternator (1)
  • - Cn90 rebuild of 1998 Bosch Alternator for $30 (1) (2)
  • - Bosch 120 amp rebuild DIY for a VW (1)
  • - Cn90 explanation of why you want to rebuild your own alternator (1)
  • - Cn90 explanation of where to get hard-to-get alternator rebuild parts (1)
  • - How to determine exactly what alternator you have (1)
  • - How to test a BMW E39 battery & alternator (1)
  • - How to tell from the part number if the alternator is rebuilt "by" Bosch (1)
  • - Bosch alternator bearing replacement from a 1997 MB S600 (1) & Range Rover (1)
  • etc.

I should repeat, since I edit the bestlinks thread hundreds of times a month, rather than make a zillion posts to the bestlinks thread, this particular thread was just a temporary holding spot for the work in progress I was doing. At first it was in the off-topic area, but someone moved it into the E39 area. I consider this thread defunct as I found a different 'hiding' spot to put my work in progress set of links.

Good luck!
