Our experts review the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas.
Edmunds Road Test Manager Jonathan Elfalan takes a thorough look at the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, the company's largest three-row SUV to date. He covers everything from the Atlas' expansive cabin quarters (all three rows of it) to its available luxury-level technology features to its handling and drivability.
Q: How much does the Volkswagen Atlas cost?
A: The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas starts at $31,425 for the front-wheel-drive S model. The vehicle shown here is the top-of-the-line SEL Premium, which a fair amount more at $49,415, but it packs in a lot of extras, including a larger engine and fully digital gauge cluster.
Q: What kind of engine does the Volkswagen Atlas have?
A: The Atlas is available with two engines: a 2.0-liter turbo inline four-cylinder (235 hp, 258 lb-ft) and a more powerful 3.6-liter V6 (276 hp, 266 lb-ft). Due to the weight of the Atlas, we found even the optional V6 engine to be a little overmatched.
Q: How big are the cabin and cargo area of the Volkswagen Atlas?
A: The Atlas accommodates seven people with surprising levels of comfort. With a full passenger load, there's still 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Folding the third and second rows expands the cargo volume to 55.5 cubic feet and 96.8 cubic feet, respectively.
