After a week of anxiety, a friend with a bore scope helped me positively find the socket I dropped in the oil pan, so the task became clear - the oil pan was coming off. I take you through the process of changing an oil pan gasket in car without pulling the motor based on the steps shown in my 78-83 Ford Fairmont Chilton's manual I bought at the beginning of #projectLOWFAREmont the $4k budget build. For reference my Ford Fairmont Futura is a 302 V8 car, so if you have an I-6 or 4cyl the process will be very similar but a little different. And I used a Fel-Pro 1 piece rubber gasket for the new one. It was messy, and wasn't easy, but it was doable.
