MOD for OEM air path

Compliments of PTR @ forum.miata.net

I had the front bumper removed (mainly for checking the rust - see "Rsut never sleeps" thread) and I have seen that there is a plastic tray under the intake.

On the plastic tray there is a small hole where air can get in to the intake area.

I have cut off a part of that tray so I made the "breath hole" a lot bigger.

Now the intake gets air from the radiator area and not trough small slots everywhere behind the bumper.

results: no intake noise increase (   ), no huge power gain noticed.

the only thing I have seen on the scangauge that when I floor it the intake air temp drops faster than with the oem setup. It could be kind of confirmation that the intake gets (quicker) cooler air.

My personal opinion is that it has a positive effect, how much is a good question, but it costs nothing!

Combined with a K&N drop in filter (what I don't have) could work pretty well.

yes I have noticed that also. AFAIK all the european models are like that! 1.8 and 2.0 also!

why it is so nobody knows.. we could ask mazda.

ps.: european cars have two horns not just only one like on the us models

I had some rust under the front bumper also. Less than at the rear but long term it won't be ok...
