96-04 MERCEDES SLK SHIFT BOOT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Gently press inward and pry up on base of shift boot until tabs and base is above cover plate. Move at angle away so opposite side tabs clear cover plate. If using a putty knife, cover with painters tape to avoid scratching.
2. Invert leather shift boot above shift knob as pictured to expose locking nut. Turn locking nut about 1/4 turn - it will only turn one direction. Then grip knob and pull up hard and off shift lever, avoiding your body and head in the path of release. Gently pry locking nut off of the track in the nut base glued to the shift boot.
3. With the locking nut removed, Grip the leather shift boot as pictured on the winged locking nut base and then pull the shift knob straight away from the shift boot. Note how the leather is wrapped around the winged locking nut base and glued on the inside edges only. See pic in step 1 for reference on glued base ring.
4. Carefully separate the glued leather boot from the plastic base frame and plastic winged locking nut base (an x-acto knife, putty knife, or gasket scraper will work great for that purpose). Clean the plastic parts carefully with sandpaper to remove the glue/leather residue. Avoid cracking the plastic parts.
5. Use contact cement or other suitable leather glue to glue the new Redline leather boot to the plastic base ring and locking nut base. Refer to this RedlineGoods write-up for insights on gluing leather.
6. Re-install in reverse order, reversing steps 3, 2, and 1.
CONGRATULATIONS - YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED YOUR NEW LEATHER BOOTS!
Useful tip
You have installed a product made out of genuine leather. As you know, to maintain a leather product in good condition, you should take care of it. We suggest occasionally (every 4-6 week for example) applying some leather conditioner/UV protector to keep your leather from drying up in the sun and cracking.
