How to measure Multi-Piece wheels, lips, barrels, ect.

i've always noticed there's not much info out there regarding proper ways to measure modular wheels, so i figured i'd share a few things i've learned the hard way. most of the measurements use RS's as a subject. mind you, i could always be wrong but a little common sense shows this method appears to work just fine. and in my experience, these methods also apply to other multi-piece wheels.

first off, when measuring and speaking of lip and barrel sizes, all measurements start at the center's mounting surface and stop at the bead. just as wheel widths are measured bead to bead, not overall width.

with larger (non drop) lips, it's easy to measure lips by laying them on a flat surace, and then measuring to the bead (this lip pictured is a Ronal lip, as you can see, to the bead it's 2.5").

measuring from center mounting surface to bead

or, if the lips are still on the wheel, you can always measure from the outer surface of the lip to the actual end using a straightedge. then, subtract .25". (i got this number by subtracting the bead width ( .5") and then adding the thickness of the lip ( .25"). lip shown below is a 1" lip

measuring inside of wheel from bead

with a drop lip, or a lip that comes off the mounting surface, then drops back towards the barrel (on RS's, .5" & 1" lips are drop lips), it's easiest to use the above method. or use the method shown below. (lip is a .5")

the centers are .5" thick.

barrels are measured the same way, only to the bead (tape reads 7.5", subtract bead width, this barrel is 7")

measuring the barrels of the wheel

and here's a diagram to better show how to measure an RS. (note, it's not to scale. i'm a wheel whore, not an engineer. )

yes sir. this shows an RS from the back side.
