How I Built Retrofits for My MK4 Jetta

Vehicle: Jetta
Time/Difficulty: Hard
Parts Needed:
  • Donor headlights (unless you're really confident and want to hack up your main lights!)
  • Projectors - I used Morimoto Minis, but chose one that works for you.
  • Shroud - Most projectors will come with shrouds. Mine did, but I used a PVC coupling for a unique look.
  • Wiring Harness - Either custom made by you, or purchased, don't forget the harness!
  • Various hardware for securing lights. Screws, epoxy, bushings, etc. Mock it up before install so you know exactly what you need.
Tools Needed:
  • Dremel - Great for cutting up the lights. The cutting disks and barrel sanders that come with a Dremel work great.
  • Various basic tools like screw driver, pliers etc.
  • Wire cutter/strippers
  • Make sure you have whatever is needed to get at the lights too. In the case of a mk4 VW, you need torx bits to remove the front bumpers to remove the headlamps.

I filmed this and built the headlamps a number of years ago. I wan't happy with the quality of filming which is why I never posted it, but some people requested it, so I made it happen. It's not an in depth step by step process, but rather a guide to how I built my lights. Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart! I was very methodical with the build/install and it was not easy or quick, but still worth it in the end.

This is by no means the only way to build a set of retrofits! This is the way I did it with no experience. I learned a lot after doing these and would definitely build another set. Feel free to ask any questions you have, use this method on your own car (VW or not), and most of all have fun! I got a lot of satisfaction out of building these, and loved telling people that I was the one who built them.

Looks cool! Wish you had some footage of them installed at the end. Nice DIY

Thank you! My YouTube channel has a video of when I removed them, but that's not a great representation of them. I'll post a photo on my DIY page when they were installed and the car was looking good.
