***Performance updates***... I still can't believe how long I drove my R with that serious loss of performance... Also an awesome update is that my fuel milage is also up despite the serious spirited driving I have been doing I am at 25.3 mpg avg after 500 miles of driving (took a little trip). Where as before I would have been lucky to see 20.0 MPG Also I reset the avg speed and fuel and for 150 miles of highway cruising at 67 I got an incredible 34.9 miles to the gallon... But man is the power sitting right there on tap... to bring that number down. Someone had recommended practicing yoga before diving into this project and I will agree not a bad thought. As far as a PITA not so much and totally worth it, if you feel that symptoms are similar to the ones described in replacing the CBV without removing the turbo I would definately reccomend this upgrade in conjunction with new lines or as I would call it a fix.

So I ordered the new CBV upgrade from Viva Performance and started the install so far I am about half way done, and should be finishing it tomorrow, and puting up pics of the project. So far I competed about 2 hours on the install (including vaccumm lines which adds maybe an hour total) and let me tell you it is not for the impatient or faint of  . For those of you that will be diving into this project I will tell you on the 06 R you will need a variety of 5mm allen wrenches to remove and install the three bolts holding the CBV in place. Yet before you do that let me list all the things you have to remove.

1. Air Box

2. OTE Pipe

3. Engine Brace Bar

4. Strut Tower Brace (If you have one)

5.Wastegate off the turbo 

Note.(Ensure proper wastegate actuator rod alignment and a pressure setting between 4.5psi-7.5psi)

6.Air Intake tube leading to turbo 

Note.(Simply twist and pull the large vent hose with metal ring off the pipe, reuse metal ring and push back on when finished)

7.Remove the coolant line in the way of the CBV 

Note.(You will lose about a pint or two of coolant)

Once you have all that out of the way you can access the 3 5mm allen bolts. (06) (Easier)  

After tomorrow I will be posting pictures and if any one wants I can do up some step by step instructions. Let me add that if you don't change the vacumm lines while doing this project you're either  or just have way too much time to go back and  when your had easy access to all the ports and lines. On my 06 the CBV looked perfectly fine but compared to the spring pressure and design of the valve itself I am excited to go out and test it... I have yet to inspect all the lines but at 45000 , I am glad that I am changing them. More to come tomorrow and if anyone has any questions let me know

Tools required.

1.Standard flat head screw driver

2.Stubby flat head screw driver

3.10mm box wrench (the internal ratcheting ones are awesome) - For removal of the wastegate bolts

4. 2006 specific 5mm allen wrenches. (Get one that attaches to a socket extension with a wobble joint this will aid incredibly

5. I reccommend at least 18 inches of extensions just have the three standard sizes and join them as needed.

6. Pliers, Needle nose pliers, and a long set with the 90 degress curve at the end.

7. Plenty of lights I have 2 florecent work lights that I tucked back behind the turbo area and helped alot

8. Tiny 9/32 wrench for getting to the worm gear clamps.

9. Crecent Wrench and socket set for removing the over the Engine bar and strut tower brace

10.Torx bit set for removing the OTE Pipe. 


So I finished the install and let me tell you give yourself 3-4 hours depending on your skill level and if you have any help. If you have any specific questions ask.

Review: The Viva CBV is absoulutely AWESOME!!!  The metal CBV absorbs less sound waves than the rubber diaphram so it is louder  and it works at all boost levels despite the spring designed for 1.6 Bar. It releases at 5, 10, 15 psi and on up. To answer the questions of many. Yes it is very doable without removing the turbo, and the results in my case were nothing short of amazing... I took it out for a test and the ECU had been compensating so bad... first 3rd gear pull hit 24 psi before I let off  ... After a hard reset the R feels amazing boost is building so fast and accuracy is rock solid While it is relearning I haven't hit above 19 psi as far as spikes and am holding steady at 18 in most cases including first and this is after going out and doing the IPD TCV relearning procedure  So fast  ... I can't believe the difference, night and day I am not even exagerating. Transitions between gears is incredible. I was using xmans video on youtube for reference where I should be at and after everything mine builds faster and recovers instantly between shifts. I definately need to shoot a video and put it up for eveyone to see... The R is now a rocket off the line, or just stabbing the pedal in a moderate gear at speed. I thought I loved my R before but after the Viva CBV and changing out the vaccumm lines I really, really love my R
