DIY Rear bumper mod

Compliments of PTR @ forum.miata.net

I always hated the look of the lower part of the rear bumper. Specially the lip wich was intended to cover the huge stock muffler.

Since I have the much smaller RS II it is unnecessary anyway.

I was long thinking what to do.

the thread of v67gsr gave me some ideas: cut cut cut

http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread...&highlight=DIY

however I wanted to keep a more streetable, close to stock look.

So I have cut the lower lip very carefully.

As it was stiffening the lower part of the bumper I needed to find out something to correct it.

I used cable ties on 3 points to tighten up the flappy lower part. In the same time I overtightened them a bit to lift the lower flap.

All in all I guess I removed 2-3 inches of "material" from the airflow and hopefully reduced the parachute effect of the rear bumper a bit.

I think the design looks very clean now, almost like stock look (with hopefully a little less aero drag.)

If you are not on your knees/don't know every details of the car, you almost can't see any difference.

ps.: I would not recommend this mod for those of you who use stock muffler. It is not a very nice view, but I love to see more of my RS II.

ps2.: please ignore my winter tires... hope I can switch back to summers in the next few weeks!

you need to let the air exit from under the car as easy as possible. (diffuser is a different story)

(the best would be to run almost without rear bumber! check the thread linked in my 1st post)

as the air stuck under the rear bumber, it works like a parachute, wich brakes the car at every speed!

my main goal was to change the look, but with the solution I used hopefully I reduced the parachute effect also a little bit.
