AMC launched it's new Matador Intermediate size coupe in 1974 against the Ford Torino and Chevy Chevelle. This car was initially a hit with a significant number being sold in 1974. It out sold the Plymouth Satellite Sebring and Mercury Montego. That was a big accomplishment for AMC. In 1974 and 1975, it would create a stir on the NASCAR circuit with 5 Wins in two seasons. Again, a major accomplishment for AMC. The sales dropped significantly in 1976 as people moved away from large cars. AMC became part of Chrysler Corporation in 1988 when Chrysler launched a take over attempt in Spring of 1987. AMC factories today and employees are still building Jeeps and Chrysler Product Cars. Approximately 100,000 Matador Coupes were produced out of the 200,000 Matadors produced between 1974 and late 1978. 1974, Car and Driver magazine awarded the Matador Coupe as the most attractive car introduced in America for 74. It was featured in the James Bond Movie, "Man with the Golden Gun" thru a product placement arrangement with AMC. Today, the younger generation rather than embracing it seems to hate the styling. Although it's no stranger looking than a Plymouth Sebring or Ford Torino or Chevy "Bug Eye" Chevelle of the same period. A Mercury Montego of the day had a very strange looking snout on it's grill. These cars were the product of the times. The commercial was produced by Wells, Rich and Greene.
