The history of Auto Union
A short history of the direct predecessor of Audi AG today – Auto Union:
• founded in city of Chemnitz in the state of Sachsen in 1932
• via merger of 4 companies: Audiwerke, Horchwerke and Zschopauer Motorenwerke/DKW
• the four interlocking rings chosen as its emblem symbolised the indissoluble unity of the four member-companies
• each of the four brands was allocated a specific market segment within the new company: DKW (motorcycles and small cars), Wanderer (medium-size cars), Audi (cars in the upper midsize market segment), Horch (top-class luxury cars)
Before the WWII, Auto Union was known for being one of the two companies (other being Mercedes-Benz) developing the „Silver Arrows“ – state backed racing program for developing superior racing cars to advance the "high speed German automotive industry". The head designer of the Auto Union „Type C“ program was Ferdinand Porsche.
After the war the assets of the company were located in the communist occupied East Germany. The factories were dismantled and assets expropriated without any compensation. On 17th of August 1948 Auto Union AG of Chemnitz was deleted from the commercial register.
Having fled right after the end of the war from the advancing Soviet forces Auto Union executives re-established the company in Inglostad on 3rd of September 1949 with funding from the Bavarian state goverment and the Marshall Plan aid. The production started again in the same year.
Initially the production was mainly based on principles of DKW and started off with a 125cc motorcycle and a delivery van.
In August 1950 Auto Union produced its first post-war passenger car - DKW Meisterklasse F 89 P. Since the facilities in Ingolstadt were not adequate for the production of this model, Auto Union used the premises of the company Rhein-metall-Borsig AG in Düsseldorf.
Daimler-Benz AG acquired the majority of and, subsequently, the remaining shares in Auto Union GmbH on 24 April 1958. From this date until the end of 1965, Auto Union was a fully owned subsidiary of the Stuttgart-based Daimler Group.
Auto Union’s new car plant in Ingolstadt went into operation in the summer of 1959. This was one of the most modern production facilities in Europe. In 1962 the Auto Union plant in Düsseldorf was sold to Daimler-Benz.
In the December of 1964 Auto Union became part of the Volkswagen Group. A four-cylinder four-stroke engine developed previously under Daimler-Benz - known as the "medium-pressure" engine - was installed in the last DKW chassis F102 and presented under the new ownership as an „Audi“ (F103, later „Audi 72“) in the summer of 1965.
